Southern Green Beans are a classic, comforting dish often found at family gatherings and holiday meals in the South. They’re simmered slowly with flavorful ingredients until they are tender and infused with delicious smoky notes. These are perfect for meals in your chilly Sukkah or cool fall dinners. Southern Green Beans also make great leftovers…if there are any!
Southern Green Beans
If you’re looking for a great all-in-one side dish, Southern Green Beans is it. The smokey flavor of beef fry/imitation bacon bits is infused in fresh green beans, and creamy, buttery Yukon Gold Potatoes. While Southern Green Beans are fairly simple to make, the rich aromatic flavors are perfect to warm you up on cool fall days or during chilly Sukkot meals.

I made this batch of Southern Green Beans using imitation bacon bits. The flavor was incredible, and by using imitation bacon bits we were able to eat it with dairy/pareve meals too.
I originally found this recipe on allrecipes.com and modified it to make it kosher and friendlier for me personally.
Making Southern Green Beans
I made a few modifications to the original recipe, but feel free to follow the original if you like.
Making the recipe Kosher
The allrecipes.com recipe call for 6 slices of bacon. As a strictly kosher eater, bacon is out. You can substitute something like Jack’s Gourmet Facon, which is cured beef “beef bacon”, kosher beef fry, or imitation bacon bits.If you’re trying to make Southern Green Beans kosher for a dairy or pareve meal you can use imitation bacon bits. I’ve used them almost every time I’ve made this recipe and they taste delicious.I also substituted 3 tablespoons of garlic oil for the 3 tablespoons of butter every time I made them.

Using imitation bacon bits allows the kosher eater to enjoy Southern Green Beans with dairy or pareve meals.
When your GI system hates you, make some substitutions to the original Southern Green Beans recipe
Frequent readers of Kosher Everyday know that my GI system hates me and I generally will substitute foods and condiments that are the worst offenders. The original Southern Green beans recipe calls for one red onion and a clove of garlic. I substituted a cup of sliced green onion and garlic oil (instead of the butter) in the recipe and it was fantastic! I really believe that this is a great way to make this recipe regardless of your personal health situation 😀 .

Sautéing green onion in garlic oil instead of red onion and garlic cloves.
Here’s the recipe for Southern Green Beans
I love this recipe because it’s fairly simple to make and tastes amazing. While I made some modifications to the original recipe, you can adapt the recipe according to your personal tastes: You are the Executive Chef in your kitchen. ‘Nuff said.

Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons garlic oil (see note)
- 1 cup sliced green onions
- 2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed
- 8 small Yukon Gold potatoes, diced
- 1/4 cup chicken/vegetable broth
- 6 slices beef fry/Facon OR 1/4-1/2 cup imitation bacon bits
- 1 1/2 teaspoons white balsamic vinegar (optional)
- salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Instructions
- If using real beef fry/Facon cook in a large skillet/wok until evenly browned, around 8-10 minutes, then remove them from the skillet/wok and drain on a paper towel.
- Heat the garlic oil in a large skillet or wok, then add the green onion and sauté until the onions are soft, around 2 minutes.
- Stir in the green beans, potatoes, beef fry/Facon/imitation bacon bits, and broth.
- Bring to a boil, cover and simmer over low heat until the green beans are tender and the potatoes are cooked through, between 10-20 minutes (you need to test the potatoes after 10 minutes).

Notes
If you like to use an actual onion rather than green onion, you can use a whole medium red onion instead of the green onion. I happen to like the way the green onion tasted in this recipe but it’s up to you.
While I’m not a fresh garlic eater, you can absolutely use 3 tablespoons of margarine/oil and a clove of garlic in this recipe instead of substituting garlic oil.
