Apple Tots with Honey Dip
Apple Tots with Honey Dip are cute little tots made out of apples instead of potatoes. Their sweetness comes from freshly grated apples and crispy from air frying! Eating apple tots is a wonderful experience. The initial crunch gives way to a burst of apple goodness, followed by the lingering warmth of cinnamon and sugar. Each bite is a small but satisfying explosion of flavor. Apple Tots are the perfect fall or Rosh Hashanah treat and the Honey Dipping Sauce takes them to the next level of incredible.
Making Apple Tots with Honey Dip
Apple Tots are made by coring and shredding fresh apples (Gala, Golden Delicious, Fuji), squeezing out all the liquid, adding a few simple ingredients, forming them into “tot” shapes, then frying/air frying/baking them. While you will spend a little time on the shredding and forming portions of the recipe, the time spent is totally worthwhile!
The original recipe for Apple Tots
The recipe for Apple Tots is based upon a TikTok video that was posted by @ballehurns back in 2022. Dear Social Media Guy flagged it and I knew at the time that it would make an amazing recipe for Rosh Hashanah and fall. While the original recipe is vegan, using flax egg, I used a large chicken egg instead. If you’re anti-chicken, feel free to use a vegan egg substitute here.
Shredding & draining the Apple Tots apples
This is an important part of making the Apple Tots. If the apples are not the right consistency then the tots won’t turn out properly.
Shredding the apples
I shredded the cored, unpeeled apples using a traditional box grater and added a little lemon juice to keep the apples from browning. The box grater also ended up giving me nicely shaped shreds as well as a few mini chunks. You can theoretically use a food processor with a shredding blade, but the shreds will come out differently.
Draining the shredded apples
I used a nut bag to drain my apples. A nut bag is used for making nut milks and I happen to have one that I use for that purpose. It allows you to thoroughly drain the apples so they’re not too moist to fry.
You could also use a mesh soup bag or towel to drain them if you don’t have a nut bag. The key is to do a good job getting all the apple juice out. Dear Daughter-In-Law had a healthy, pure drink of apple juice for lunch and said it was simply outstanding!
Frying the Apple Tots
I ended up using my air fryer to make the Apple Tots so that they would be lighter and not greasy. I did have to spray them with propellant-free avocado oil spray so that they’d crisp, but the amount of fat that that added was negligible. You could fry them in hot avocado oil to make them super decadent and they’d be incredibly delicious. I had to spray the Apple Tots once they were out of the air fryer before rolling them in the cinnamon sugar to make it stick, but if you fry them in oil you wouldn’t have to.
The Apple Tots Honey Dip
Keeping with the whole “Apples & Honey” theme, I wanted to make the dip for the Apple Tots honey based. I also wanted to make it dairy-free so that it could be eaten after meat meals, according to Kosher laws. I really thought that I had dairy-free Greek yogurt in my fridge. Moving on…I did have dairy-free sour cream though, and used that instead as the base for the dip. Dairy-Free sour cream and Greek yogurt are fairly similar in taste and consistency, so you could reasonably interchange them depending upon what you happen to have handy.
Here’s the recipe for Apple Tots with Honey Dip
There are quite a few personalizations you can make when preparing Apple Tots with Honey Dip. Here are a few.
- The types of apples. I used Golden Delicious and Fuji but you can choose your favorite firm apples.
- How you fry them. I air fried them but you could use hot avocado oil as well.
- Dipping them in cinnamon sugar. I did but it’s not required.
- For the Honey Dip I used dairy-free sour cream but you could also use dairy-free Greek yogurt or even dairy loaded versions of either.
- You can make the whole recipe plant based by using plant based eggs. The original recipe calls for 1 teaspoon flax seeds plus 2 tablespoons hot water instead of an egg.
