Description

Apple Tots with Honey Dip are cute little tots made out of apples instead of potatoes.  Their sweetness comes from freshly grated apples and crispy from air frying! Eating apple tots is a wonderful experience. The initial crunch gives way to a burst of apple goodness, followed by the lingering warmth of cinnamon and sugar. Each bite is a small but satisfying explosion of flavor.  Apple Tots are the perfect fall or Rosh Hashanah treat and the Honey Dipping Sauce takes them to the next level of incredible.

Original recipe from @ballehurns on TikTok.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Honey Dip

  • 1 (5.3-ounce) carton plain dairy-free Greek yogurt or 2/3 cup dairy-free sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons honey

For the Cinnamon Sugar

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

For the Apple Tots

  • 4 large apples (Golden Delicious, Fuji, Gala), cored and shredded
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon corn starch
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 large egg
  • propellant free avocado oil spray or avocado oil for frying

Instructions

For the Honey Dip

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the Greek Yogurt/Sour Cream with the honey until smooth.
  • Refrigerate covered until ready to serve.

For the Cinnamon Sugar

  1. In a large bowl or dish mix together the sugar and cinnamon.  Set aside.

For the Apple Tots

  1. Toss the shredded apples with the lemon juice, then place the apples in a mesh/nut bag over a medium bowl.  Squeeze tightly until all the liquid is drained.  Reserve the liquid for another use.
  2. Place the apples in a large bowl.  Toss with the corn starch, sugar, cinnamon and egg until completely blended.
  3. Using a cookie scoop, scoop portions of the apple mixture and form them into a “tot” shape.  Place on a (air fryer) tray.  Repeat with the remaining apple mixture.
  4. If using an air fryer, spray with propellant free avocado spray then fry for around 20 minutes at 400°F until golden brown.  Spray with additional spray when removing from the oven.
  5. If frying, heat around 1/2-inch of oil in a medium skillet.   Fry the tots until golden brown on both sides.
  6. Immediately roll the fried Apple Tots in Cinnamon Sugar.
  7. Serve with Honey Dip.

Notes

The apple juice that is squeezed from the apples is absolutely refreshingly delicious!  Don’t discard it!

There are quite a few personalizations you can make when preparing Apple Tots with Honey Dip.  Here are a few.

  1. The types of apples.  I used Golden Delicious and Fuji but you can choose your favorite firm apples.
  2. How you fry them.  I air fried them but you could use hot avocado oil as well.
  3. Dipping them in cinnamon sugar.  I did but it’s not required.
  4. For the Honey Dip I used dairy-free sour cream but you could also use dairy-free Greek yogurt or even dairy loaded versions of either.
  5. You can make the whole recipe plant based by using plant based eggs.  The original recipe calls for 1 teaspoon flax seeds plus 2 tablespoons hot water instead of an egg.
