One of my absolute favorite places on the planet is Machaneh Yehuda Market in Jerusalem. After an amazing trip, way back in 2013, and a very special hour with Mordechai from Pereg, I wrote the recipe for Machaneh Yehuda Cabbage Salad. It’s filled with fresh, vibrant ingredients, and a super satisfying crunch. It’s crazy fast to make and takes me back “home”.
Machaneh Yehuda Cabbage Salad
I’ve been taking trips to Israel since I was a kid. My Father (z”l), was very involved with the formation of Motorola Israel, and when he would travel, we sometimes got to go with him. As a kid it was awesome, and as a person who is still trying to adult, it’s still incredibly awesome. Even back in 2013, I was crazy in love with the Land of Israel, Yerushalayim and especially Machaneh Yehuda. After a trip that year, I wrote an article for aish.com with the recipe for Machaneh Yehuda Cabbage Salad. Israel and Machaneh Yehuda are still my favorite places on the planet, and this is one of my favorite cabbage salad’s too.

Check out all the fabulously simple ingredients that when combined together, take you back to the flavors of the shuk.
Time Traveling Machaneh Yehuda Cabbage Salad
Here is what I wrote for the aish.com recipe. What’s funny is that I could write exactly the same thing after every trip to Israel I’ve taken since lol.
During my recent trip to Israel, I went to visit one of my favorite spots in Israel – the Pereg store in Machaneh Yehuda. Mordechai (the guy behind the counter) spent nearly an hour having me sample all the fabulous spices and seasonings in the store. After tasting most of the loose varieties I left with a “few” packed bags of Pereg ingredients. One of my favorite mixes was, according to Mordechai, “Good with Cabbage”, and when I made the salad the Shabbat after we got home it was a huge hit! Here is my version of the Machaneh Yehuda Cabbage Salad. Feel free to add more sugar or salt according to your personal preferences Keep in mind that the type of oil you use will also add different flavor to the salad. Bitayavon!!!

Here’s the recipe for Machaneh Yehuda Cabbage Salad
This is a really short post because this recipe is insanely simple! You can used bagged cabbage or fresh cabbage that you shred by hand. I used a mandoline to shred my fresh cabbage, always staying on the short side of the wedge.
Make sure to refrigerate the salad for at least fifteen minutes to ensure that all the flavors blend together.

I prepped the salad in my great Served gold bowl. It’s insulated and keeps in heat or cold for hours, ensuring that my food doesn’t spoil while I’m serving it!
Additionally you can use blanched slivered or halved almonds. In this version I used sliced but it’s totally up to you.
Because I’m also making this recipe right before Passover this year, finding Kosher for Passover dried cherries or currents is a problem, so I stuck with the ubiquitous dried cranberry which you can find in abundance with all the Kosher for Passover food items.
