What is Gourmet Popcorn
Popcorn is the perfect snack. Gourmet Popcorn takes the perfect snack to a whole new level of the popcorn experience.
Popcorn is the stuff that comes out of your air popper, your microwave, or your stove top. It’s made up of popcorn kernels, sometimes with some sort of oil to give it a little bit of flavor/texture or improved mouth feel.
Gourmet Popcorn takes traditional popped popcorn, adds flavorings and ingredients to make the mundane extraordinary.

Picking the right popcorn
It’s important to choose a quality popcorn that pops well. While I’ve used many brands of popcorn, including the discount movie popcorn kernels from Imperfect Produce, my absolute favorite is Orville Redenbacher.
This popcorn consistently pops large, crunchy popcorn with only one or two unpopped kernels left in the air popper. That’s very very good.
You can also use some of the more gourmet kernels, some with different flavors and textures, but for the purpose of this post I’ve only used Orville Redenbacher.
I also really really like the popcorn seasoning from Gordon Food Service. Keep in mind a little goes a long way. Seriously. It’s powerful stuff.
Gourmet Popcorn Classifications
Yes, the engineer in me requires the logical classification of the different types of popcorn. I just can’t help it.
Air Popped with added flavorings/powders
This classification takes simple air popcorn and boost the flavor by adding spices, flavored popcorn salts, flavored sprays, herbs and powders.
For example, you can make Classic Butter Popcorn by air popping popcorn, spraying it with butter nonstick spray then sprinkling popcorn salt on top. Or, you can use my favorite Kernel Seasonings popcorn salts, like white cheddar, to create a great low fat snack in no time at all.
Here are some great suggestions:
- Classic “Butter” Popcorn
- Herbed Popcorn
- Caramel Hot Chocolate Popcorn
- Truffle Popcorn – made by spraying Truffle Nonstick spray and sprinkling truffle powder and sea salt on top.
- Kernel Seasonings popcorn seasoning
Stove top Popped with added flavorings/powders
This is the oldest way to pop popcorn on the books. You simply place some oil/butter/margarine and popcorn in a pot with a tight fitting lid, turn up the heat, then wait until the popping nearly stops – shaking the pot back and forth the whole time to ensure the popcorn doesn’t burn.
You can use flavored oils to add some taste to stove top popcorn as well. For example, you can use garlic oil to give a big flavor boost.
Just be careful not to burn the popcorn.
Here’s my classic Stove Top Popcorn recipe:
- 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
- 2 tablespoons oil (can be flavored)
- Place the popcorn in a 6-8 quart stock pot with a tight fitting lid. Heat the popcorn over medium/high heat until the popcorn starts to pop, continuously shaking the pot forward and back and side to side.
- Once the popcorn starts to pop, reduce the heat to medium, continuously shaking the pot until the popcorn slows to almost stopped popping.
- Remove the pot from the heat and allow it to finish popping.
- Season with your favorite popcorn seasoning and eat!
