- The Hindy Chopper A.K.A The Vidalia Onion Chopper
I was introduced to this amazing tool (gadget doesn’t begin to describe it!) by my dear friend Hindy. Initially when she introduced it to me I was incredibly skeptical…I mean for heaven’s sake…just use a knife! In any event, my dear friend Hindy humored me until I personally came over to her house and tried it out. Awesome!!!!! Especially if you have a LOT of chopping to do this tool amazing. When making any kind of chopped salad for a crowd, I’m done in a nanosecond, and everyone around the kitchen island applauds at the incredible culinary display. In honor of my dear friend Hindy, who introduced me to this phenomenal tool and who I mocked incessantly (she IS a good friend), I have dubbed this tool “The Hindy Chopper” forevermore. Trust me…this is one tool you will never regret having. Oh, and don’t lose the little white comb that comes with it to clean the grates. Cleaning is super easy with it, not so much without.
- Adjustable Measuring Cups Small, Medium and Large (Just like the 3 bears!)
I recently did a chef cooking demo. When I pulled out my handy dandy adjustable measuring cups and there was an audible gasp from the crowd. “What is that?” “OMG that is amazing! Where can I get it?” What’s so great about this measuring cup is that it helps to measure viscous ingredients while pushing the entire amount out of the cup with none of the stuff left in the cup sticking to the bottom and sides. It comes in several sizes, and yes I do own them all. If you’re going to get just one to try it out, I recommend starting with the large.
Small:
Medium
Large
- My favorite spiralizer GEFU Spirelli Spiral Slicer
When I was at the 2016 Housewares Show, in my fabulous hometown of Chicago, the GEFU company was demonstrating this cute little spiralizer. I was impressed by the how easily it spiralized, how small it was, and by the extra part that pushes the last bits of your vegetable into the spiralizer so you don’t waste any of your precious spirals. I had had larger spiralizers and they were bulky to store and didn’t necessarily do as good a job as this one. It makes thin and medium sized spirals but does not do ribbons. Perfect if you’re looking to purchase a spiralizer.
- Bamboo cutting boards by Core
I had originally purchased these cutting boards using a Groupon special. They are great for your really sharp, excellent quality knives. They also clean up easily and the eco friendly side of me likes that the bamboo is sustainable. Best of all…they are really pretty.
- Bottle opener
I’ve had this gadget for a long time. At the time my oldest son was born, the baby food companies were sealing their baby food jars in such a way to make them childproof and adult proof!! If you contacted the company they would send you this extremely useful gadget to open the jars. Basically it’s used to pop the top of a jar to allow some air into it, making it super easy to unscrew the top of the jar. I now use it for nearly every jar I open (baby food or not) and it holds a prominent place in my kitchen gadget drawer.
- Pencil Sharpener
Fun. Just fun. It looks like your childhood pencil sharpener but has a vegetable peeler on it and a ribbon cutter. Fun. Just fun. Found this at the Chicago Housewares show being demoed by an innovative Israeli Company. I have since seen it online available by many vendors. After reading reviews I found that not all the brands are equal. Here is the one I ordered and I like it a lot.
- Pastry Board
My grandmother A”H lived with us when I was growing up and did much of the baking in our house. Whenever she had to roll out dough she used a large wooden pastry board that she must have had for a good 60 years. It was well used and well seasoned. When I got married one of the first items I registered for was a large pastry board – I knew how useful it could be. Several years later I found this pastry board which has circular as well as linear measurements on it – very useful for measuring the dough you’re rolling out.
- Straight rolling pin
I bought my first wooden straight rolling pin as a young bride at a Pampered Chef party. I still use it. I love the fact that at this point it’s seasoned so I need very little flour to keep it from sticking to whatever I’m rolling. I also love the fact that it rolls so evenly. When used with rolling pin bands everything you roll will be super even and the exact thickness you need.
- Evendough rolling pin bands
SO simple, SO useful. I use these every time I roll any kind of dough. The dough always, always, comes out exactly the same. Every. Time.
- Dehydrator
Because I can and because my family really likes dried fruit. I bought my dehydrator at Aldi’s for less than $20 and I realized that you don’t need a fancy shmancy dehydrator to get really great dried fruit. During the summer I was a “dehydrating maniac” and we constantly had fresh pineapple and other fruits drying. Now I buy pineapple rings packed in their natural juices and that works very well too. It’s apple season so those are going in next. If you have the space this is a fun gadget to have.
More to come…

My name is sandy and i can not eat things made with potatoes so what can I substitute for the potato starch in your challah recipe
Sharon Matten says
Thanks for your email Sandy. Maybe consider substituting arrowroot flour? Rice flour would make the challah more dense but you might be able to use that also. Readers? Any additional suggestions? Sandy, please let me know what you end up using and how it turns out. Thanks.
